Social Media

Social media is praised for being able to connect you with friends and family around the world at any time; however, the underlying problem with that view is that kids and young adults alike fail to use social media to connect. Rather, they passively view, largely without real conversation as the result. People continuously scroll through their feed, watching other people’s lives go by and the only emotions that come along with that are jealousy, when one might feel like others are better than themselves, and entitlement, when one feels they are better than whoever they are swiping past.

Self loathing is a huge negative that comes along with social media especially for young women. On many occasions, when they do not measure up to society’s impossibly difficult and unhealthy beauty standards, it can leave them feeling like they are worthless.

Entitlement, when it is benign, can result in show-off posts about the fabulous music festival you went to or a fancy South American vacation you went on, and, at its most dangerous, can result in cyber bullying.

What I would like to see going forward in the near future is not that self-loathing and cyber-bullying be completely abolished because in today’s society that is unreasonable. I would just like people to do is, instead of leaving a comment on a post from a friend you have not seen in a while, reach out to them individually and perhaps ask to meet in person to catch up formally.
